The new EasyWorship 2009 UI, pt 1

The launch of EasyWorship 2009 is quickly approaching, and to kick things off I’d like to unveil the new EasyWorship 2009 interface. There are some big new features in this version (more about that later), but the most obvious change is the visual look/feel of the interface.

The big picture
With 2009 you’ll see a more sleek & modern UI, more familiar to users of Windows XP/Vista/7. The control header (top bar) and pane dividers have been reworked to optimize workspace. The media player has been completely redesigned. Application icons have been updated throughout. The look/feel of the resource area has been reworked. And finally the display options (preferences) area has been significantly redesigned. Our goal was not just better aesthetics, it was also to improve the overall usability and experience, making the easiest presentation tool even easier to use.

The new EasyWorship 2009 UI

Over the next few posts I’ll show the UI in detail, and provide a bit of background & rationale for these changes. Let us know what you think.

Thanks for posting that Jason. I’ve been looking forward to having a look at the new UI. The old EW interface was looking a bit tired and this breathes some new life into it. Thank goodness you didn’t opt for the gimmicky MS ribbon UI!! ;)

All I can say is WOW! We have been using EasyWorship at our church from the beginning. Never been disappointed. We were a little skeptical on whether or not any “big” updates were coming out. But I have to say our church LOVES this program.

Will the Mac version look similar? Are they going to charge a upgrade fee if we already have easyworship 2007 to switch to the Mac version and if so how much?

Thanks Rich. We’re excited to see how EasyWorship users respond to the updated look.

It’s funny you mention the ribbon UI, it’s been the topic of alot of conversations here at EW. I’m always fascinated when designers try to simplify things by making them more complicated. :)

Thanks Trevor, we like to hear “wow”. And we hope you say “wow” again when you see the new features in action.

I can assure you, we’ve got some really exciting things up our sleeve for 2010 and beyond. We can’t talk about them yet, so you’ll have to trust me. But I have a feeling you’ll be saying “wow” alot next year too.

Hi Matt. EasyWorship 2009 will still be a PC only product, our first Mac product will be the next version (tentatively called 2010). We’ve received alot of requests to go cross-platform, and we’re working diligently to honor those requests with the best, most innovative and most stable product possible.

I can’t say much about the 2010 look/feel yet, but I can say that we’re bringing as much commonality across the Mac/PC interfaces as possible, while still honoring what makes each OS unique (native controls, icon style, interactivity, etc.). Stay tuned, we know you’ll like what you see.

Regarding 2010, I don’t think the upgrade path has been decided yet. Whatever it is, I think you’ll find it to be generous and reasonable.

    Adi, thanks for your comment.

So far EasyWorship 2009 actually has a smaller footprint from moving to a later version of the development environment and cleaning up some legacy code. Parts of the painting/drawing code have been rewritten for the new UI and foldback allowing it to be more efficient such as in the resizing and scaling of windows.

In regards to new features we have committed to having seamless integration with our media-store and foldback that is customizable as a third monitor that can have its own background, text formatting and alerts. There are also a couple other features that we have in plan but are not ready to reveal.

Thanks Dave. What video format(s) are you downloading from WingClips? And what problem are you having with playback (slow/sluggish, doesn’t play at all, sound issues, etc.)?

I’ll have to check with the developers about additional media formats in 2009.

I’ve been rlly waiting foor some screens since i heard there is coming a totally reworked version. and the new UI looks alot cleaner, even easier and really modern feel and look.

You know what would be great?

Live typing in the first screen (control panel) what would appear directly on the second screen, for the viewers. That would be great for for example taking notes during a sermon for the audience, or if the pastor names a website, you could type it directly for the audience,

Another thing that would be very usefull, is automaticly splitting in bible text.
When i want to display Psalm 3:1 – 30, and i want 3 lines at the same time on the screen, i have to add the bibletext 10 times in pieces (psalm 3:1-3, psalm 3:4-6, psalm 3:7-9 etc)

Btw, the new GUI looks great!

From the Netherlands? What city/region? There must be some exciting things happening there. We are constantly amazed at how much website traffic we get from our European friends, especially from the Netherlands. Keep up the good work.

No official release date yet for 2009, but it is coming soon. We will send an email when we are ready to launch. You’ll be one of the first to know.

Thanks Jan, glad you like the UI.

The live typing is an interesting idea, I’ll run that by the developers. And yes, I agree, having more control over how scripture spans slides is definitely a good idea.

Since 2009 is in it’s final development stages we’ve already locked down the feature list, but we’re always interested in ideas for the next release. If you think of anything else, be sure to let us know. Your feedback is welcomed and appreciated!

I typically do not do the downloads, but the files tend to have a WMV file extension. They also have QuickTime available. The file typically will not play in EW (you start it but get no video) but they will play in MS Media Player, QT, or Real.

Excited to see the new UI and hear about some of the benefits of the re-write.

Not only does our church use EW, but I teach classes on Media Presentation Software and EW is my recommended platform. (I’ve converted a number of churches from some of those “other” platforms ;-) by simply doing a demo).

Do you mind if we blog about the new UI and link people to this post? I have quite a number of people from my seminars and workshops that read my blog and would be interested to see this.

    Dave,
You might want to call support to make sure that you aren’t having issues with some rogue codecs on your computer. Usually MP4 files will work as long as you install the k-lite codec pack exactly as instructed on the KB article under Video Compatibility.
Some WMV files can be too much for your computer to handle when playing them through EW, depending on how they are encoded.

Thanks guys for working so hard to bring us this software. The power and usability of what we already have is fantastic and I can’t wait until the next version.
Maybe this will have to wait for 2010, but I would really love a bar to live switch the backgrounds. i.e. while a song slide is live just clicking on a background in this bar would send the new background live leaving the words the same. (I think that makes sense).
I’m patient though – very excited for 2009 and even more excited to run EW on my Mac!

Can I suggest a darker colour scheme? Especially at night, it’s quite startling with so much white. A darker grey colour would be more suitable for low light productions :-)

Also, PLEASE can we have a timer (Seconds remaining) on video playback? Is that possible?

Otherwise, looking better. Keep touch screens in mind – as win7 brings new possiblities. Larger “live” buttons are a good start.

This will allow you to keep using your existing video cards and just split the second output into two monitors. This is much easier than getting another card.

We are using EW since 2006 in our church in “The Green Hart of Holland” and are very happy with it. Great to read the announced improvements. We support the wish of Jan Willem from our country to automatically split the selected Scripture in pieces that are readable. May I add a related wish in case we missed possibilities that are already available: we would like to have a font in a fixed pixel size for both songs and scripture text. Now it is always dependent on the number of lines in the text how big the font is on the screen. The buttons in the editing field are not working and we never found how to get a default size.
Thank you for the answer in advance!

My Church in Australia has been using EW2007 for well over a year now – really happy with it – Good to see that you can start using foldback with EW2009.

    Just a few question:
    1. When play A/V file will EW show a time or time remaining?
    2. When play audio only files will it allow background to added?
    3. Finally, what we do is vary the speed of transtion on the fly for a)going between song when using different background for each song and b)between slide in the song – dependant on speed of song. At the moment in 2007 at you have open the transition toolbox then move slider – is it possible or will these sliders be available on the main interface? Eg. slide transition slider next to logo botton and song slider next to background button

Any chance you changed the behavior of the mouse wheel handler? I’ve always been frustrated that the wheel advances the slide in the live presentation. Sometimes I need to advance the list box view without changing the slide so I can see the bottom of a long song. It seems to me that other Windows programs adjust the view position (thumb position) with the wheel and not necessarily the cursor position.

    1) Let me start with the question of when EasyWorship 2009 will be ready. The beta should be available next week if all goes as plans.

    2) Will EasyWorship 2009 have Chinese support. The short answer is no. EasyWorship 2010 will have Chinese support, and as soon as 2009 is behind us, I will show you screen shots of 2010 working with Chinese text. If I could have put Chinese support in 2009 I would have.

    3) Will we be able to show online stream in EasyWorship 2009, for example youtube… YES. EasyWorship 2009 does support the ability to bookmark and display a web page to the congregation, including youtube and others.

    4) And just for Dan, I did fix the mouse wheel to scroll instead of select. Since I was there, I also added mouse wheel support in the media area as well.

    5) MAC and PC. EasyWorship 2009 is PC only release. EasyWorship 2010 will include a PC and MAC version both written in house, by people who know what picante sauce should taste like :).

Anyway, I’ve got to get back to work. Hope this helps.

PS…Thank you for the EasyWorship team and the 2009 Beta release…(that’s why I need more patience.) Amen

If the lord is going to teach you patience, I won’t get in that way :).

I had a bug today with integrated web browsing that I just finished before dinner. One last fix, fingers crossed, and it should be ready.

FYI for those of you who are coming to the dance for the first time, we like to have our betas bug free. That doesn’t mean that everything will be perfect but if it blows up or otherwise functions incorrectly, and we know about it, its fixed before its beta.

    Anyway…

Flash is not supported directly, though you may be able to find a way using integrated web browser.

We debated about this but decieded to move forward with EasyWorship 2010.

Wow, you guys are working so hard for us, Thanks.

We love selling such a well engineered, user friendly product. Most people buying 2007 are saying how great the software is – wait ’til they see 2009!!!

    Keep up the great work!

We have EW2007, and is a good software, but I just want to know if the EW2009 can be installed in 64 Bit OS, like Windows Vista or Windows 7?

Another thing, this software would be good if we can install in another languages than English.

I think the new gui looks great! Here at our church we use both easyworship and the mac equivalent (propresenter). Each has there own unique abilities but I like easyworship better. One thing I am curious about is how it handles pictures and audio. For instance if I have a bulk amount of images I would like to play as a slide, I can’t add them in as just a slide without creating a powerpoint which is time consuming. I was also wondering about audio playback feature, just being able to use easyworship as a full feature presentation rather than having to run a seperate program for audio tracks. Keep up the good work! I know its hard to meet the demands of everyone. God Bless!

I love the new Beta. I can’t wait to find out what you have planned for 2010. I’m with Kevin Crow though. You really need some way of presenting images in a slide show.

EasyWorship really has a tendency in the media playback and management in different environments, mainly in churches that are modernizing their projection systems.

I’ve used EasyWorship in my congregation for over two years. I really like and I think it has very good performance.. And one day hope to see this wonderful program in my language of origin. I understand english, but I am in the place of others who have to use this great program for its services and activities and have to break your head trying to understand the interface or messages and features EasyWorship because only in English .. I think you should think about offering a version other languages as well as other countries and regions will benefit a lot better. I know that thousands of Spanish-speaking people and the entire Latin American region will appreciate and will use a new version more fluently in Spanish.

I am really very anxious to see the new version .. However, I have a question: when will the version in Spanish? I think EasyWorship should have a bilingual approach so others can use it in their native language, in the end, it significantly improves the user experience that EasyWorship provides .. I hope this is taken into account to a new version .. Thank you!

Carlsand, the version we are working on for 2010, Mac/PC, has multilingual support for the both the user interface and output. This version will also support the multi-byte languages. Spanish prolly being on the of the first translations :).

In response to Andrew Lim’s query on chinese text support. I have managed to display chinese characters as a song in EW07 by just copying from a word document and pasting it as a new song in EW.

After that I inserted alternate lines of English translation in each verse, and EW displayed that no problems.

I believe that it is probably just a matter of turning on (other) the language support in Windows.

For Chinese bibles, or typing in chinese characters on the go, I don’t know/haven’t tried & we have to look to the EW support team for an answer…

    New Feature Requests:

    1) Configurable Countdown timer on Foldback screen
For media, display remining time to finish

    2) Foldback, PPT display only 2 pages, current and next, and make them bigger. Instead of even fitting 4 on the screen, use the space for the other 2 for accompanying PPT notes.

    3) for Foldback song lyric display, link display of “Next lyric line” to what is highlighted on the “live” Song UI area. (Eg: Click Verse 1 -> display Verse 1, use scroll wheel to highlight Chorus 1, display still on Verse 1 but Foldback “Next” shows Chorus 1)

    4) have a thumbnail preview of live feed in the VJ mode panel. even if its just 10fps

Thanks! Easyworship 2009 is long awaited and pretty good so far!

    Additional Feature Requests:

    1) Video button – A video feed button next to the logo, black and clear buttons on the ‘live’ panel would be handy for fading in and out
video feed during power point presentation. Otherwise unable to recommence in the middle of a sequence of animations on a ppt slide.

    2) Have a ‘record’ module/plug-in to record output to the secondary screen as an AVI, MPG or other video file. With audio source from the computer’s mic input (result will be a prefinished mixed video of the service (for those using live feed),including fades to all multimedia material). Automatic volume normalisation/rec volume control would be a huge bonus.

Preferred file formats are: MPEG2(for DVD/Blu-ray), and MP4/WMV/flv for Videocasting
